This blog started out as a companion piece to my book, Musings from the Christian Left (excerpts of which can be found in the July 2004 link) and to support a planned radio show. Now, its simply a long term writing project from a Christian Left Libertarian perspective (meaning I often argue for liberty within the (Catholic) Church, rather than liberty because the church takes care of a conservative view of morality.

Don’t Cut the Gas Tax for Summer Holidays, Double It

Don’t Cut the Gas Tax for Summer Holidays, Double It

Gas taxes need to go up, or better yet be set a a fixed percentage rather than a fixed excise. The feds should do this too.

The last I checked air pollution and warming levels, we need less driving, not more. The last time I drove, I noted we need more road repair – especially given the effect of the snows we have on roads.

We also need more gas tax revenue to build and operate more rail.

While I agree that the gas tax is more reasonably fixed as a percentage, it is absurd that the far Left inveighs against oil company profits, while they make less per gallon than the federal and state governments.

I'm not suggesting that the tax needs to go up to punish the oil companies. The gas tax needs to go up to effectively pay for the infrastructure to have adequate roads AND adequate public transportation for those who can't or prefer not to drive - whose absence from the roads provides a benefit to those who still use them.

The gas tax does not "punish" oil companies. It merely forces drivers to pay for roads. The only way in which oil companies are punished is if the tax is inelastic, meaning that the oil companies absorb it by accepting lower profits to not raise prices. I discussed that issue in the comments, by the way.
